Homemade butter is honestly the easiest possible thing to make in any kitchen. Whether you use a stand mixer, a hand mixer or even just a mason jar with a lid, all you need is heavy whipping cream and 15 minutes.
Homemade butter is also so versatile because you can flavor it in any way that you want. Go simple with just salt or add some herbs. Make garlic butter or make a sweet cinnamon sugar alternative. It’s all in your hands. Literally.

INGREDIENTS : (makes 14 oz of butter)
- 1 quart carton of Heavy Whipping Cream
- Salt, herbs, garlic, cinnamon-sugar, etc (optional)
STEPS :
- Use a stand mixer, hand mixer or mason jar with lid. Pour your heavy whipping cream in, turn your mixer onto medium-low speed and begin whipping. If using a mason jar, pour in your heavy cream, close the lid and begin shaking. Whip/shake for 15 minutes or until the solid separates from the liquid.
- Strain your liquid from your solid by putting the solid parts, which is your butter, into a sieve. I like to SAVE my liquid. This is called uncultured buttermilk. You can use the uncultured buttermilk in place of regular milk in any recipe that calls for milk, or you can drink it straight like I sometimes do. It has a nice full fat heavy cream flavor to it.
- If you are using a sieve or colander for separating the liquid from your solid, then just run the solid contents in your sieve under cold water from your sink faucet until all the cloudy water is gone and the water is clear. This will prevent premature spoilage.
- Place on a piece of parchment paper, begin forming into a shape and try to squeeze out and wipe off as much liquid as you can. I just use a paper towel for this. Then use your parchment paper to shape and roll your butter into a log or any form of your choosing. You can also put this putter straight into a butter crock or glass dish and into the fridge. Enjoy!
If adding flavorings, add them directly after you rinse your butter off with water. Mix into the butter either by hand or by using your mixer.
